About Musical Improv Atl

Do you ever wish you could re-live your musical theater days from high school or college? Feel like it’s too late?

IT’S NOT!

Most people walk into their first musical improv class thinking the same thing: "I can't sing." We're here to change that — not by turning you into a performer, but by helping you find the joy that's already there.

Our class is about building real confidence from the ground up. You'll get comfortable with music and rhythm, find your voice (yes, your voice — exactly as it is), and learn to let go of the self-judgment that keeps most people from ever trying in the first place.

By the end of the eight weeks, you'll know how to kick off a song in the middle of a scene, shape it with a chorus that sticks, and land it with a finish that feels earned. You'll learn how to share a song with a scene partner and make something spontaneous feel surprisingly whole.

But more than any of that? You'll have fun. Real, unguarded, surprised-by-yourself fun. That's what musical improv is really about — and it's what we're here to help you find.

Who I am

I’m Joel Camargo Jr and I started Musical Improv Atl.

My relationship with musical theater has a complicated origin story.

I did musical theater in high school — but I never really let myself do musical theater in high school. I was also a jock, and somewhere along the way I decided those two worlds couldn't coexist. So I kept one foot out the door, never fully exploring what music and performance could mean to me. Then graduation came, and that door closed.

For years, I left it behind entirely.

It wasn't until my 30s that performance found me again — through improv. Something clicked. The spontaneity, the play, the collaboration. It reawakened something I hadn't realized I'd buried. When I discovered musical improv through a workshop with Fiona Campbell, that something became a full-blown obsession. Fiona eventually invited me to join Measure Island, a musical improv team I've now been performing with for three years.

Musical improv gave me everything I didn't let myself have as a kid. It was freeing in a way I wasn't prepared for — like finally giving permission to a part of myself that had been waiting patiently for decades. It reignited a fire I thought I'd let go out for good.

Now I can't stop thinking about how many other people have a version of that same story. The kid who sang in the shower but not in front of anyone. The high schooler who almost auditioned. The adult who still hums Broadway tunes on the commute and wonders what if.

This school exists for all of you. My mission is simple: to bring more musical improv to Atlanta — and to help you reconnect with your inner Broadway star, exactly the way I finally got to reconnect with mine.
