Class Description and goals:
This intermediate class is designed to expand on the skills learned in the Foundations class in order to perform a fully improvised musical.
The goals of this Intermediate class are as follows:
Learn and identify the similarities in various storytelling structures
Learn and identify musical theater tropes and types of songs
Create meaningful characters that have goals and depth
Become more comfortable improvising emotional songs
Confidently add simple choreography and build beautiful Stage Pictures
Learn how to lean into emotions in order to create captivating moments
Learn how to sing together as a unified ensemble
NOTE:
This class will have weekly homework! It takes between 2-3 hours each week to complete outside of classroom time. The homework is mandatory in order to qualify for the Advanced class.
Eliza Skinner, Musical Improv teacher at UCB who taught Jess McKenna and Zach Reino (from Off-book: The Improvised Musical Podcast), has said that the most useful thing you can do in order to get better at musical improv is to WATCH MORE MUSICALS! Class and reps are important, but we also need to be learning outside of class. Watching musicals will help a TON in order to get a better grasp on a lot of the concepts that will be brought up in class
